EM200plus-E Diesel Exhaust Measurement

The EM200plus-E is an electronic multiple channel measuring instrument for analysing the exhaust gas concentrates of diesel engines. The internal ambient pressure sensor allows the immediate use without preceding calibration in underground mines.

Description

Benefits

Shock and impact resistant housing

The EM200plus-E has a high-resolution colour touchscreen in a lightweight shock resistant body. Easy handling and advanced technology
allow precise and fast results of measurement.

Precise measurement of CO and NOx content in exhaust gases from diesel engines

One multigas analysis instrument to be used for precise testing of diesel engines in underground mining
applications: regulation compliance (in some countries maximum emissions from engines are regulated to be
able to set ventilation rates), health risk (a build up of these gases can be dangerous to individuals; CO, NO
and NO2 have regulated exposure concentrations), operating costs (increases in CO/NOx output can indicate
a problem with the engine or the scrubbers resulting in reduced fuel efficiency), reduce downtime (using these
values as pre-indicator for engine breakdowns can enable preventive maintenance instead of reactive measures
and loss of production).

Documentation

Saved data can be locally documented or transferred to the PC.

High precision measurement in different depths

An internal pressure sensor automatically compensates ambient pressure influences in different depths. The
sensor allows the EM200plus-E to function at 4,000 m (2.5 mi) below or above sea level. This offers
location flexibility so the engines are not required to go to the workshop as a “fixed” testing area.

Built for Underground Diesel Testing – Not for Boilers

Purpose-Built for Mining, Not Adapted from Heating Applications

Many portable exhaust gas analysers on the market were originally developed for oil and gas boilers in domestic, commercial or industrial heating applications. These instruments are designed to measure parameters such as flue draft, combustion efficiency, stack losses, flue gas temperature and gas concentrations.

While suitable for heating systems, they are not designed for underground diesel engine testing.

In mining, diesel exhaust assessment follows a fundamentally different approach.

Diesel Testing Underground Requires Defined Operating Conditions

In underground mining, diesel exhaust gas testing must be performed under clearly defined engine conditions:

  • Idle
  • High idle
  • Loaded operation

Only by measuring CO and NOx under all three conditions can:

  • engine condition be properly assessed,
  • emission performance be verified,
  • and compliance documentation be produced.

Generic combustion analysers do not reflect this workflow. They are not optimised for sequential diesel testing, nor for structured recording of results in line with mining requirements.

The REMS EM200plus-E: Designed Around the Mining Test Procedure

The REMS EM200plus-E is purpose-built for underground diesel applications.

The instrument guides the user through all three required test modes:

  1. Idle
  2. High idle
  3. Load

Each test is performed sequentially and automatically recorded as a complete test set, exactly reflecting real-world mining practice.

Results can be:

  • printed on-site using a compact external printer, or
  • stored in the internal memory and transferred to a PC for further evaluation and reporting.

This ensures that documentation is:

  • complete,
  • traceable,
  • and aligned with the expectations of mine operators, auditors and safety management systems.

 Accurate Measurements at Any Depth

In addition, the REMS EM200plus-E compensates for one of the most common hidden sources of error underground: ambient pressure.

By continuously measuring absolute pressure and compensating the gas readings accordingly, the instrument delivers true gas concentrations, independent of:

  • shaft depth,
  • barometric pressure,
  • or site location.

The same unit can be used:

  • deep underground in Australian mines,
  • across multiple sites with different depths,
  • or at high-altitude operations overseas,

without site-specific recalibration.

A Practical Compliance Tool for Australian Underground Mines

For Australian underground operations, the REMS EM200plus-E offers:

  • Diesel-specific testing logic (idle, high idle, load)
  • Accurate CO and NOx readings at any depth
  • One annual calibration only
  • Portable, rugged, site-ready design
  • Clear, auditable test records

Unlike adapted boiler analysers, the REMS EM200plus-E is a diesel exhaust gas analyser designed for mining from the ground up.

Supporting Safety, Compliance and Asset Reliability

Accurate diesel exhaust testing supports:

  • underground air quality management,
  • diesel fleet compliance,
  • early detection of worn or failing engines.

Rising emissions often indicate engines approaching overhaul. Identifying this early helps prevent unplanned failures, costly downtime and safety risks.

With the REMS EM200plus-E, mining operations gain a reliable, purpose-built solution for underground diesel exhaust testing—not a heating analyser repurposed for mining.
